There is an ancient story of a holy man who decided it was his time to move on to heaven.  He went to knock at heaven’s door.  God responded, “Who is there?”

The holy man answered, “God, it is me.” 

God answered, “Go away, there is not room here for you.”

If we ask ourselves, “Who am I?” an answer in terms of an explanation that’s convincing to the mind eludes us.

The fact is, we really can’t answer the question of who we are from an intellectual point of view.

Oh, we can describe how our body and mind originated in a long process of evolution. We can explain with increasing detail how the body works, and even how the brain functions to some degree.

Many of us have had some pretty awful things done to us in the past. Some of us may even be going through a horrendous time right now.

We may have been bullied in school, abused in a relationship, sexually assaulted, raped, beaten, or injured in an accident such as falling from a tree or ladder, slipping on ice, or being hit by a car.

Certainly a great many of us have been assaulted verbally, criticized, put down, and made to feel inferior.

“Sinners has more good times,” says Celie.

“You know why?” asks Shug

“Cause you ain't all the time worrying about God,” says Celie

“Nah. That ain't it,” says Shug. “Us worry about God a lot. But once us feel loved by God, us do the best we can to please him with what us like.”

Celie is puzzled. “You tellin’ me that God love you and you haven’t done nothin’ for him? I mean not go to church, sing in the choir, feed the preacher, and all like that?”

Many are afraid to let go of their ego. They are afraid that if they don’t have an ego, they will lose their identity.

But which identity is lost when the ego diminishes?

Only the false self we all learned to be while growing up because our authentic self wasn’t acceptable to society.

When the ego steps aside, what comes through in its place is pure being. Though not just being per se, but our unique manifestation of it.

Being is the only reality there ultimately is.

Not always friendly to each other and historically at times hostile, Protestants and Catholics are once again being reminded of the different approaches they have taken ever since Henry VIII split the Church of England from the Church of Rome almost six centuries ago—an event detailed in the current television series The Tudors, also available through sources such as iTunes and Netflix.

My 7 year old grandson Brannoc asked me the other day, “If God made everything, then who made God?” I LOVE questions like this! Grinning, I cast inside for an answer he would understand. When you write for children, truth must be distilled to its purest essence so they get it!

I told him that a great question like his couldn’t be answered by the mind that thought it. It would require the language of his spirit and heart, that this God language would be something he would feel, not see. And if he got really quiet, he would feel the story of God and Brannoc going on.
